Day 21 - San Diego to LA Airport

11th August 2016

Today is the final day of the most amazing trip. Time is a funny old thing. San Francisco and Alcatraz seem like a different holiday, yet the days have whizzed past so fast. Oliver has missed the cats, and his family, and whilst Andrew and I have missed family, we agree that we could so easily stay another three weeks. Also, writing this blog has really helped me to feel like I am close to those that I would normally miss. It's like I have made contact with them everyday.

We packed up the final few items from our room - squeezed in the souvenirs we've bought, and said goodbye to the lovely Dana Hotel.

Andrew had searched some nearby restaurants, and found one called Cody's in La Jolla (pronounced La Hoya). We set off, and 20 minutes later we arrived in La Jolla. Another beautiful little town, with the most amazing views of the ocean. Today is VERY hot.

La Jolla was the place where Dr Seuss lived - and his widow still lives, and where his work is archived at the University. Cody's offered us their last table, which was in the sun, and I could feel my arms burning - even at 10am. I ordered the Crab Benedict. Eggs and crab cakes on a toasted muffin. It was absolutely divine. I have never tasted crab like it. It was so delicious. You know those meals that you never want to end? Cody's was very popular, and a cute place.

An American family of three came in with their dog and sat on the next table. Their dog was a cute little puppy, so I got talking to them about him. They asked about our trip. They were from just north of San Francisco, and were in La Jolla on holiday. The mum said 'even Californians holiday in California'. Makes sense - why would you go anywhere else? Such a nice family.

We hopped back in the car and continued to the airport. One stop at Walmart for sweets for the flight and for friends at work, and then we were off. The traffic was super kind to us today. It was a good time to be travelling, and we made it to the car rental return bang on time.

No photos today - sorry.

The reason being that I managed to leave the camera bag in the rental car. So that's our beautiful camera, two lenses, a flash unit, a remote control, battery, batter charger, 5 SD cards - three of which are full of the photos from this trip.

Luckily, and the only thing that stopped me from bursting into tears, was that thanks to this blog, I have backed up all of the photos to Oliver's laptop, which we brought with us in order to complete the blog. So all the memories are safe.

I am also very lucky to be married to someone who has the most endless patience - not even a cross word. He just said, it's ok, we are insured, and the main thing is that the pictures are safe. What a gem.

So we are just about to board. Goodbye California. You have been SO wonderful. You will always have a special place in our hearts.

See you all on the other side of the pond
