Day 8 - Goodbye California, Hello Oregon

8th August 2019

We had a nice breakfast at our hotel and packed up the car (again) and set off North on the 101. We saw a secluded beach area and parked the car to take in the last view of the Californian Coastline. It’s grey today.

We continued our drive, past McKinleyville and entering the Redwood National Park. Miles and miles of beautiful trees on either side of the winding roads.

Our first, and only stop today is Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail in the Redwoods National Park. The trail is dedicated to the First Lady to honour her outstanding achievements and efforts in the field of protecting nature in America.

When we got out of the car, there was light rain, so we put our hats on and hiked on in. Such a sight! It was so dense and green and the sound of the rain on the high canopy of redwoods made it such a special experience. There were a few families there, but most of the time we were on our own.

We snuggled back into the warm car and started the long drive to Oregon. A short stop in Klamath for a sandwich and a drink. With the big foot! Then long stretches of road ahead of us.

As we left the 101 for the last time, and took the 199 north east we started to prepare ourselves for crossing the state line. Camera ready…

A small sign at the side of the road “Oregon”. No fanfare, no state trooper, not even a sign above the road. So no picture!

We saw signs to Illinois Forks State Park, so to give Andrew a leg stretch, we took this turn. The car park was full of the strangest looking people, lots of tie dye and a smell of drugs, so realising we didn’t fit in, we got back in the car and just continued to our motel - The Tiki Lodge in Medford. So far, Oregon is very hot and a little run down, so looking forward to finding some nice parts.

It’s been a day of travel, so not too much more to report.
